Move Stainless Steel Fastener Procurement Forward by Equipment Project

Humid environments, outdoor equipment, piping systems and assembly projects that need to consider corrosion resistance often require more than one bolt or nut. Requesting quotations and confirming materials and packing separately for bolts, nuts, screws, washers, threaded rods, double-end studs and U-bolts in different specifications can add procurement and assembly-preparation work.

Select More Suitable Stainless Steel Fasteners for the Actual Service Environment

Food equipment, water-treatment systems, pump and valve piping, chemical equipment, outdoor machinery and coastal high-humidity environments do not have the same material and matching requirements for stainless steel fasteners. Purchasing only by the name “304” or “316” may not address differences in media, temperature, humidity, chloride exposure, chemical contact, cleaning methods and installation location.

View stainless steel fastener applications, environmental conditions and project information

Submit your equipment service environment, available specifications, drawings or BOM to LANCIE so that material selection, product specifications, matching relationships and packing requirements can be discussed in relation to the actual equipment project rather than judged by a single material designation alone.

Confirm the Right 304 or 316 Stainless Steel Fastener Direction Before Procurement

In stainless steel fastener procurement, material selection should not be based only on the name “304” or “316.” Media, temperature, humidity, chloride exposure, chemical contact, surface condition, crevices, mechanical load and customer specifications can all affect material selection for the actual project.

View 304 and 316 material considerations, service conditions and RFQ information

Type 304 stainless steel is commonly used for general industrial equipment, indoor assembly, normal humidity conditions and non-severely corrosive applications. Type 316 stainless steel is generally considered when chloride exposure, humidity, coastal conditions, chemical media or a higher level of corrosion-resistance consideration is involved.

Type 316 contains molybdenum and generally offers better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments than Type 304. However, under long-term seawater immersion, high chloride exposure, elevated temperature or crevices that retain liquid, even Type 316 may require further material and design review.

304 Stainless Steel Suitability

Type 304 stainless steel can be used for general machinery, indoor assembly, normal humidity conditions, stainless steel frames and standard industrial connection locations.

If the project involves higher chloride exposure, seawater, salt spray, chlorine-based cleaning agents, strong acids or alkalis, or sustained elevated temperatures, suitability should not be determined from the Type 304 designation alone.

316 Stainless Steel Suitability

Type 316 stainless steel can be considered for equipment and connection locations requiring further corrosion-resistance evaluation.

For water treatment, chemical, coastal, outdoor, high-humidity, chloride-containing or specific media environments, selection should be confirmed with the actual medium, temperature, concentration, exposure method and customer specifications.

Type 316 stainless steel does not mean unconditional suitability for every marine, seawater-immersion, high-salinity, high-temperature, high-pressure or severely corrosive environment.

Service-Environment Information

To improve material-selection accuracy, please state the equipment location, process medium, temperature, humidity, cleaning method, chloride or salt-spray conditions, chemical-contact conditions, expected service period and customer standards in your RFQ.

Fasteners in Critical Connection Locations

If fasteners are used in flange joints, piping systems, equipment installation or high-load locations, also provide load information, thread engagement requirements, installation method and required quality-document requirements.

Do not procure based on material grade alone. Submit your equipment service conditions, drawings, BOM or customer part-number list to LANCIE to confirm the appropriate 304 or 316 material direction for global industrial projects and reduce later selection and procurement adjustments.
